A house with German roots

Some places are dreamed first, and then, with patience, raised log by log.

The entrance gate

Block House was born from the dream of Uwe Petersen, a German jeweller who passed through New Zealand before coming to Chile in search of a place where life moved at a different pace. At a gathering of the German community in southern Chile he met Heini Tampe and Marta Schmidt, a local couple who welcomed him as one of their own and introduced him to the owner of a stretch of lakeshore in Las Cascadas. He bought the land there in 2010.

The earthquake that same year convinced him to build with one of the oldest and sturdiest techniques there is: the log house, the Northern European Blockhaus that gives the place its name. He bought a thirty-year-old Douglas fir plantation and, with carpenters brought from Germany, the whole logs were carved one by one and joined with wooden dowels between 2011 and 2013. The leftover timber was later used to build the Cabin.

Almost everything you see inside, the furniture, the staircase and the details, came from the hands of Heini, a farmer by trade and a wood artist by vocation. He also built El Carro, the little house on wheels where Uwe lived for his first two years, facing the beach, while he imagined the house.

Today the main house, by the lake, is private and not for rent. Guests stay in the Cabin or in El Carro, on the same property across the road, in the Puerto Klocker area, between Puerto Octay and Las Cascadas.

Good to know

We want you to arrive knowing exactly where you are staying: a country cabin in southern Chile, with wonderful things and others worth knowing in advance.

What are the surroundings like?

This is real countryside. The cabins are surrounded by pastures with cattle that sometimes wander into the gardens, and there is plenty of wildlife and insects depending on the season: horseflies, June beetles, spiders, wasps, bees, flies and mosquitoes. At dusk, it’s best to turn off the lights before opening doors or windows.

Is it noisy?

Birds are part of the place and some are loud: southern lapwings, ibises, parakeets and owls. Also, both stays are about 21 metres from route U-55, so you will hear passing cars, motorbikes and bicycles. If you are a very light sleeper, keep this in mind.

What is the weather like?

It rains all year round, especially between March and November, with occasional windstorms, hail and thunderstorms. Winter brings hard frosts: during a frost the water heater may freeze and leave you without hot water until the temperature rises. The firewood may be damp on the outside, but it is dry inside and lights without trouble.

Is the water drinkable?

Yes. It is well water, drinkable and chlorinated by the supplier. It may taste different from city water.

Are there security cameras?

There are outdoor cameras, active and monitored. There are no cameras or recording devices inside the stays or in any private space. The PTZ cameras may switch on lights and make the sound of their movement.

Are pets allowed?

Yes, they are welcome. Please don’t leave them loose or unsupervised in the gardens. In the Cabin, they also may not get on the beds or be left alone on the property.

What does cleaning include?

We do a full clean before your arrival and at the end of your stay; cleaning during the stay is not included. All items are inventoried and checked at check-out. There is an outdoor bin, which we empty on collection days.

What are the access roads like?

The internal roads are dirt and do not require 4x4; puddles may form when it rains. Each stay has its own parking next to the cabin.
